There is a threshold, usually somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, where franchise dealerships stop wanting a car as a trade-in at any serious price. That threshold reflects what the dealership can retail on its own lot, not what the car is worth. The car did not become worthless; it became someone else's inventory.
Two things matter far more than the raw odometer number. First, what kind of miles they are — highway mileage is dramatically gentler than city mileage, and a 150,000-mile Long Island commuter car is often mechanically healthier than a 90,000-mile Brooklyn one. Second, what the vehicle is: trucks, three-row SUVs and Toyota and Honda products all hold value at high mileage far better than mid-size sedans do. If you were quoted a number that felt like a rounding error, the mileage is probably not the reason.
Two things vary more between states than people expect, and they are the two that hold up a sale: what happens to your plates, and what has to be signed on the title.
In most states the plates belong to you rather than to the car, so they come off before it leaves and get transferred or surrendered — and the receipt for that is what proves your registration ended before your insurance did. A few states move plates with the vehicle instead. Titles are mostly a signature and an odometer reading, but Pennsylvania requires the assignment be signed in front of a notary, and several states want the seller to file a separate notice of sale.
